Yesterday I had the privilege to have a good friend of ours come over for a sitting at my home. Jenny and her daughter Madisen had some photos taken and I asked Jenny if I could do a shot of the two of them together. The photo you see is of them in front of a planet which I designed from scratch. The brush was made from one of the photos I had in my collection. I must say I was rather impressed how well it turned out. It is also an example of one type of work which will be displayed in my other blog. "Click this Layer that" is a sight where I will have photos for sale. It is not yet ready but hopefully will be soon.

Kids Against Hunger

There was an event held today at the Municipal Center here in town. "Kids Against Hunger" is an organization which helps feed starving children throughout the world. Our elementary school had all the students from grades K thru 5 come in and help fill packets with rice, soybeans, dried vegetables and flavoring. There was enough food in each pouch to support six meals. Both of our children who are students at the school, attended the event along with my wife and I.

The food is to be shipped out to the children of Haiti. In the few hours we were there, the students were able to fill nineteen boxes. Each box was able to deliver 216 meals with a total of 4104 meals ready to deliver in only a short time.

It gives you a good feeling knowing in some way how you were able to play some part in making those children a little happier. But what touches me most is that here we have children helping children which is something that we as adults can learn from.

There is so much pain and suffering in this world and you needn't go far to see that. Right here within our own borders, people are struggling trying to keep a roof over their families heads. I only hope that within my life time, if not my children's, that the nations of the world can unite and see the real problems that are all around us rather then obsess over money, power and greed. Man only uses ten percent of their brain in a life time, but if we look inside ourselves we can see that we are able to use one hundred percent of our hearts if we learn to to all just get along and help one another.

I came across this program from Crazy Talk which allows you to make your photos talk and create facial expressions. I only have the trial version right now but I will be buying it when I have the money. Its very cool and their is so much you can do with it.

Its days like this when I enjoy the area in which I live. Nature brings in a sign of how it can entice its beauty upon the world. Dabbing with Digital Art

I recently decided to give digital art a try. Having a fascination with space and the stars I looked up some tutorials on line. It took some doing and I have a ways to go but here is my first attempt at it. The planets look alright but I feel I need to work on the lay outs a bit more. I titled this one "Solar Storm."

New software for photos

I recently purchased software to improve my photos. Fluid mask 3 is a wonderful way to pull an image from its background as to the current one I am using in photoshop. This will come in very handy when getting around things like hair and trees. It gives your photo a more natural look when placed into a background of your choice without the rough cut look. I have to do more practice on it to get it down to a science but you can see by the image I have posted, how fun it can be.

Allergic to Penicillin

Thursday night I was laying on the couch. I had been fighting a head cold for a few days when Tammy brought me in a bottle of meds ( Augmentin) I had from a prescription two months prior for my ears. Little did I know that this drug was to be taken with prednisone to counteract the penicillin but I took one and after 15 minutes I began showing signs of a very bad reaction to this drug. I began itching on my hands. Then it spread to my legs, arms, neck and all over. Within a few minutes my body was covered lumps and my body turned beat red and sweating uncontrollably. Tammy called 911 and they were there within minutes. I began loosing consciousness and at times was unresponsive. Very scary to be laying on your bathroom floor wondering if this is going to be it for you. At times I thought I was and I never hope to experience that again. The next morning in the hospital they gave my a band for my wrist which states I am allergic to penicillin. In fact they are keeping me for a 24 hour observation just to make sure I would be alright. Its Friday night and I'm doing very well and can't wait to go home in the morning.

A Tribute to 9/11

Studio Closing

It comes with great sadness that I will be closing down my studio October 10th. With the economy being the way it is and people watching their every penny, I am unable to continue with it and also pay the bills coming in to the shop. Tammy is also closing down her scrap booking part of the store as well.

However we are not completely gone from sight. Tammy will be selling her products online and holding scrap events quarterly at a nearby establishment and I will still do my photography on location at customers homes or local areas of interest. In time we are hoping the economy will turn around and we can once again open a new bigger store in another location in the area.

I want to personally thank all the wonderful people I have met while here and how grateful I am for allowing me to give them memories that will last a life time in their photos.

Girls begin swimming lessons

Macayla and Mckenzie started their swim lessons today. They were to start on Monday but we had still been camping and they could not go yesterday due to the weather. Mckenzie had to leave the pool early cause she was getting too cold but is excited to try again tomorrow.

4th Of July Weekend Getaway

On Friday we all attended the Albert Lea parade and got home fairly late so Tammy and I decided we would get up early the next morning to pack up for our trip to Flandrau state park by New Ulm. We had expected the kids to come into our bedroom early demanding their chocolate milk or jump all over me as they usually do, but on this morning we were not bothered and took advantage of the situation and slept in. Tammy had hoped to be packed and get over to New Ulm and visit some of the historical sites before our 4pm. check-in time at the park but plans always seem to change.

We arrived about 2:30 that afternoon and did manage to drive around a bit to see some of the interesting things in town. Some areas we would like to see in the near future like one of the parks which had a fountain with a statue of a fairy on it.

Once we got to the park we bought a year round state park pass and some items for our camping expedition like fire wood, ice and some really neat packs which you could throw in your fire to change the color of the flames. We camped in the rustic area where there was no electricity and the toilets were rested in a shack with a hole in the ground. (P.U.) You may have to fight the flies when you go in though so a can of raid might be useful. Water was available from a well which you had to hand pump from a nearby faucet. It really gives you a sense of how things must have been in the old days.

There are lots of things to enjoy there like swimming, long trails, and lots of wildlife to see. The deer in the park are use to seeing people and roam all over. We saw them several times and one night there was a group of five within 150ft. of our tent.

We would like to get out and do more camping yet this year. The girls had a good time and it was nice having them connect with nature instead of tying themselves to the TV all the time. Tammy and I had fun teasing the girls about Big foot and telling them we were going to give them some bread and leave them in the woods if they didn't behave. Of course that back fired when Kenzie said " Hey how did you know about Hansel and Gretel." We had to laugh and when we told the girls it was time to leave the park she yelled to Macayla, "Come on Hansel, its time to go."Yes people were looking at us chuckling. All and all I think we had a good time.

Sara & Peter Tie the Knot

New Student

I Have begun training a new student in photography. Lindsey has joined me in the studio to learn photography. I have never trained anyone before but her enthusiasm is very very high and she seems to be enjoying herself. I brought her in on a sitting today and allowed her the opportunity to do some shots herself. Over the next few weeks we will examine indoor and outdoor photos along with working on enhancements through photoshop. It is my hope that she will be ready to go out on her own within the next few months. Thanks again Lindsey for allowing me to show you all I know.

Love Is In The Air

Over this past weekend, I was given the great pleasure of photographing a wedding for a young couple Sara and Peter. It has been a number of years since I last did a wedding and I think I was just as nervous as they were. I must say of all the weddings I have done, this one was the funnest of all. The people and the atmosphere was very relaxed and they were all very friendly and made me feel like one of the family. Sara's mother, Susie asked me a few months ago if I would be willing to do the wedding for her daughter and I'm glad I did. Susie and I worked together at a local nursing home before I was laid off for economic reasons. Once the family receives their CD's, I will post some of the photos provided I have their permission to do so.

On another note, I would also like to Thank Jenny for taking time out to come and assist me with the wedding. She did a beautiful job and if another wedding comes my way, I would like to hire her on again. She knew what to do and even offered some great advice on some shots to take. She told me she had fun getting out there to help me achieve the photos I got. I couldn't have gotten those shots without her so again, Thank you so much

According to Webster's dictionary the term copy-cat means: one who imitates or adopts the behavior or practices of another. I'm sure many of you have been frustrated by an individual who feels the need to dwell in your shadow to copy or create something which is very similar to your work or ideas. Its true that all of us become inspired by something we have seen which helps our own imaginations and creativity. For that, there is nothing wrong. It shows how talented we are. However when you work hard to accomplish something only to have people basically steal your thunder and pretend they are the originators of the work seen by others can be very intimidating. I say it only shows that there are people out there who are basically riding through life, feeding off their predecessors to accomplish goals they could never achieve on their own. In one way you can feel good about it to an extent. It only means that these type of people are jealous and envious of those who actually have the creative flair to succeed. I mean I'm not just talking about a photo or even a product on the market. It could be something as simple as running an ad in the paper or quoting a logo a business may use. What ever the case I just wanted to let all the people out there who feel as I do, that it will never stop me from using my imagination to create works of art which I know was not produced by another. Besides could you ever really be happy knowing your success was attributed from another.

Mckenzie's busy week

On Friday of last week, my youngest daughter Mckenzie graduated from pre-school. Moments after receiving her diploma she said, "Now I can go to kindergarten tomorrow." She was upset to find she has to wait til fall to begin.
The following day was a gathering called Take a kid fishing day, held each year in Albert Lea. The weather was not so cooperative but I took both my girls there anyway since neither one had every fished before. They gave out free fishing poles, tackle and bait to all the kids that showed for the event. Also they would give out lots of free prizes. Mckenzie won a teddy bear and Macayla scrambled to gather as much free tackle as she could carry. Mckenzie caught her first fish and you can see by her photo that she was happy yet a little afraid by the fish flopping all over the place. The weather turned nasty shortly after and the event was rained out, but I promised the girls I would take them out again this summer.

A simple background idea

Here is an interesting way for anyone to bring a background to your photos. I photographed a sheet of scrapbook paper from my wife's stock and merged it with a picture of my daughter. Using photoshop, I shot her against a black background, screened it and dropped it in for a fun way to do pictures. By doing this it also helps when it comes to creating a page to scrapbook since it was made from one. By the way, I asked my daughter to give me the look when she does not get her way and as you can see by her expression, its either give in or watch as she becomes possessed by a little demon.

The Past Meets the Present

A few weeks ago I had a wonderful lady named Lila come into my studio for a sitting to surprise her children with some portraits. Having looked through my sample book, she saw a picture of an elderly woman masked together with an old photo taken of her in the 1940's. Lila asked if I would be able to do the same for her. I did with a few of the older photos she brought and after seeing them, she was very happy with the results. My plans are from here on that I will be posting one or two of the best from each sitting I do providing I have permission from my customers to do so. Thanks again Lila. Your warm heart and kindness is an inspiration to all photographers.

The Eagles have Landed

I took my girls out to find an eagles nest which was reportedly only a few miles from my home. I followed a gravel road near the river and while coming around a bend in the road, my daughter yelled out that she could see the nest. Sure enough sitting approximately 50 feet off the ground was a large nest. We stopped and I could see that there was indeed a bald eagle perched on the edge of the nest. I set my camera and began taking shots. I felt I still was not close enough and got out and walked across a small field to the edge of a wooded area. Again I took more shots and then realized that there were 2 eagles. Having my 300mm. telephoto lens at max I still felt that I was not close enough but getting any closer would have put me in the thick of the brush and I would not have gotten a clear shot. I plan on going their more often in the near future and hopefully get some good shots of them in flight closer to where I'm shooting.

Baby Jali's Baptism

Recently our little one year old granddaughter was baptized. Using only my on board flash and harsh lighting conditions at the church, gave most of my photos a rather yellowish tint. My wife Tammy decided to bring Jali down to our studio to get better shots and also to take some pictures of us with her since we never got any at the church. Again I only used my on board flash but given that the lighting was so much better I was able to produce a wonderful shot and transpose the photo with a sepia texture. We loved how well it turned out and now proudly display her on our wall.

A picture is worth a thousand laughs

I'm sure we have all been there at least once in our lives. You go in to have your pictures taken hoping to capture that one image to display proudly on the mantle for all to enjoy. You do your best to give that certain pose or drop dead smile that makes people say "WOW."

Unfortunately there are those times when it seems that things never go right and you dread the idea of seeing your portraits. Either your eyes squint or your having a bad hair day. Perhaps you've come to the studio not realizing your infant son or daughter has given you some of their baby formula to wear from a prior feeding.

What ever the case, I have a friend who came into the studio to have portraits taken with his son. He said from the beginning how much he hated having his picture taken cause he could never smile right. It started out great, and my flash could hardly keep up to the wonderful expressions I was getting from their son. Then came Judd's turn with his son. I shot through my lens telling Judd to keep looking at me with a smile while trying to keep his sons attention on me. After the sitting was done I asked everyone to gather around my computer to view their pictures prior to the enhancements which I would do later.

It started out great and we saw so many wonderful shots of their son Dane. But when it came to a few shots taken with Judd and Dane the house came crashing down with uncontrollable laughter. I realize I am suppose to be a professional and keep my emotions in check but when I saw that I could not keep it in, especially when everyone else was busting a gut.

Well when things finally calmed down and we finished wiping the tears from or eyes I asked Judd who was being a very good sport about the whole thing, if I could post his photos on my blog so that everyone could see them and hopefully get a good laugh themselves. He agreed and I have also cropped his son out of these photos as to protect the innocent.

I want to personally thank Judd and his family for taking time out to come into my studio and allow me the privilege to take their portraits.

Puppies

For quite some time I have asked people to come into my studio for some portraits of their pets.

This last Wednesday a friend of ours came into the studio to have pictures taken of her daughter and her three Yorkie puppies. I was thrilled at the opportunity and asked if I could take some of the puppies alone as well as with her daughter.

Here you see the puppies I took. They were so good and sat still through the whole sitting.

I will be setting up a pet photo contest soon. What it will consist of is a half hour sitting with their pet or pets and or the owners if they choose. Everyone that comes in will get three 4x6 proofs and be entered in the contest. They will then be posted in the studio for all customers to vote on for their favorite photo. The winner will receive a matted 8x10 framed print of their pet and will also be posted on my blog for all to see.

Hello again,

Its been several months since I last posted. I really need to keep my blog updated but there never seems to be enough time.

In early January I received a magazine called "Lifes Images." It's a magazine published by Stampington. The picture that I submitted of my two daughters had been chosen for publication. The title of it was "Sisters" and I had also written a short poem to go along with it. I never got the chance to open it before my wife grabbed it from my hands out of excitement to see our daughters photo in a national magazine! It really does make me feel wonderful and only pushes me that much more to have my work available for all to see and to maybe catch the eyes of a Publicist.

I recently showed my photos to the Blue Earth Chamber of Commerce. I had been informed by co-workers that they were looking for photos of nature that had been taken around the surrounding area. After seeing some of my wildlife photos they asked if I would be interested in doing some work for a calender which would be posted at various way side rests in Minnesota. Needless to say I was very excited to hear that they liked what they saw. I'm currently waiting to here back from them.

BLUEJAY vs. SQUIRREL a peanut war

Several months ago, my wife and I noticed two blue jays coming to our feeder helping themselves to the peanuts we had set out for them. They would fly in, snatch up a nut and fly out just as fast as they came in. We wondered how they could crack the nuts open so fast and come back for more. We watched as they flew off to a tree line next to our home and realized they were stashing the nuts on the ground. Little did they know that something else took an interest in what they were doing. Two squirrels waited in the shadows for the Blue jays to fly off and ran in to steal the nuts only to hide them a few feet away. After about twenty minutes of this activity going on, the Blue Jays caught on to what was going on. One would remain sat above a branch to guard their catch while the other fetched more. Not wanting to be out done, the squirrels would work together to fool the Blue jay that lay above them. One would dart in to distract the Blue Jay while the other grabbed what he could and ran with his prize. In the end the Blue jays gave up and took the rest of the peanuts from our feeder to somewhere else. We laughed at this so much that I thought it would make a nice story to tell. My Wife and Daughters

My wife Tammy holding one of our grandchildren Jali, Daughter of Rani, Tammy's oldest and also my stepdaughter. Tammy and I have opened our own store in Albert Lea, MN. She sells scrap booking and card making supplies and I have my portrait studio. It started off slow like so many businesses do when first starting out, but we have had a great customer feedback on both of our businesses thus far. Tammy has a great talent for being well organized both at home and with her portion of the store. Her friends got her into scrap booking several months ago, and when the opportunity to open a shop came up suddenly, we both decided to give it a go. I'm glad we did cause there is a good sense knowing you can be your own boss and make allot of new friends in the process.

My oldest daughter Macayla has a natural talent for drawing. Not a day goes by that she doesn't have a pencil, marker or crayon in hand designing her next masterpiece. She started her first year of school (kindergarten) a few weeks ago and has had the time of her life. I think her favorite part is being able to ride the bus back and forth each day. She likes it when she has homework to do from time to time. I think in time that may change if she is anything like her dad (lol).

My youngest daughter Mckenzie is our little peanut. She is small for her age but full of energy. She enjoys playing dress up and mothering her dolls. She is very content when playing with her dolls. At times I will listen in on her conversations she has with them and its cute at what she has to say. She likes to cuddle up with me at times to watch cartoons or ride on my shoulders for a piggy back ride around the house.

A Brief History

I was born in Mankato Minnesota on December 30th 1965. I lived a few miles from town next to a county park which was a perfect setting for me and my three older brothers. That's where my love for the outdoors began. Walking the trails and inner tubing down the creek next to our home in the summer was some of the best memories for me. Later as I grew up and moved away from home, the county bought our property and moved our house to another location. It was somewhat sad for me because I wanted to take my kids to see the home I grew up in.
On another note I wanted to say that along with all the good memories from my younger years, there were also the bad. In mid 1992 my oldest brother Steve discovered he had an aggressive form of Cancer. After me and my other brothers were tested, it came down that I was a perfect match to be a bone marrow Donner. I always looked up to Steve and thought what better way to help him by giving him the gift of life. The surgery went well and a few months later just before Christmas, he was sent home to be with his wife and to young daughters. Then just days after Christmas, my parents came to my apartment to give me a birthday present and informed me that Steve was back in the hospital. The Cancer had spread to his brain and there was nothing more the doctors could do. Steve wanted to have his youngest baptised before he died so we all gathered in his home for the proceedings. It was also a day for us to say our goodbyes to him. I felt as though I failed him but being my brother and even in his current state also knew the right thing to say to me. He told me I did all I could and that if it had not been for me that he never would have had a first Christmas with Courtney who was only a few months old then. His words are something I will never forget and it makes me happy that I could give him those last few months with his children. He died the first week in January 1993.
Years later, my brother Rick who had always known that he had problems with his kidneys, was in need of a kidney transplant. Of course I volunteered to be tested and found once again to be the perfect match. We went through with it and in July of 2001, he received one of my kidneys. Things changed for him and now to this day his health is great and he is living a normal life. I'm glad I could be there for him as I was with my brother Steve. Remember that friends may come and go, but family is always there. Do what you can and life will give you its rewards in time.
